Mike Song

I’m pretty sure not everyone who’ll read this knows of Mr. Mike Song. But I’m pretty sure some of you are familiar with Randy Jackson‘s show “America’s Best Dance Crew”. The first season has witnessed one of the most entertaining hip hop crews on the face of the earth, which is non other than the JabbaWockeez. However, people overlook one of the crews there who took the axe just before the finale. I’m talking about the “Kaba Modern” crew. This crew is a respected hip hop dance group in the States most especially in the west coast.

However, we won’t be digging in deep with Kaba Modern, only to one of the senior members of the crew…Mike Song. I may not know if he competed in an international hip hop competitions, but you can say that he’s one of the best choreographers there is. I mean check these out…

Those polygonal hand movements is from a dance style called “tutting”. It is somewhat inline with popping. Mr. Song here is a wizard of that. His sense of choreography and style has helped earn “Kaba Modern” a cult following after the season 1 of ABDC. Bet you didn’t see these one coming…

That’s right ladies and gents, it’s not only isolated upper body to lower body liquid movement, but also with his head (from the “Ave Maria” one). This video was taken when he was just 14. At such a young age his popping is already refined, what more after almost 10 years of doing it.

Mike also teaches dance workshops across the States, often visiting dance studios of fellow hip hop dance superstars such as Moon Zhang, fellow Kaba Modern member Tony Tran, Anthony Lee to name a few. What’s a hip hop choreographer who can’t do collabs? He has done some with the other choreographers I’ve just named.
